Morten Skou Andersen & de mennesker han normalt sammenligner sig med – Gentleman scholar, classical philologist, noted lecturer on Roman history and language, and art-rock singer songwriter, Morten Skou Andersen brings his quirky brand of art-rock meets folk pop to IPO! He and his band stand for a distinctive sarcasm and raw, personal performances. The social sarcasm in the lyrics goes hand in hand with history, geology, types of wood, bizarre love and what you least expect. Nominated as Danish Band of the Year in 2019 for the Gaffa Awards, they have six albums to their credit. Come check them out!
Sasha Bach – Drawing on influences from his New York upbringing as well as his Danish roots, Bach has entertained audiences around the world. There is practically no genre that is off limits – his range includes everything from pop/rock to R&B/soul to folk-singer ballads and even a bit of disco and rap! Whether solo or backed by a band, his warm vocals and heartfelt delivery can’t help but draw you in!
“Atom” Chris Dall & Powerband – For fans of bands such as The Ramones, The Troggs, and The Kingsmen come “Atom” Chris Dall and Powerband with their punk garage and fuzz fueled mayhem straight outta Copenhagen. In addition to their latest English language full-length, Dolls for Dinner, they’ve got a slew of more recent Danish language singles and EPs, which are even catchier!
Caper Clowns – A quintet of young Danes from Odense who made an immediate splash on Danish radio and the world-wide power pop blog underground with the release of their debut, The Buca Bus, late in 2016! The lead single, “Pockets”, was immediately chosen as the “weekly hit tip” on Danish national radio station DR P4, and received much airplay. Their follow up, A Salty Taste To The Lake, has been called “simply delicious indie power pop” and easily rose to the top of several 2018 “best of” lists. Their latest, Abdicate The Throne, “…not only hits the heights of previous offerings, but it reveals a lot of hidden depths” (I Don’t Hear A Single). With multiple comparisons to the likes of McCartney, Crowded House, ELO and Jellyfish, and the possibility we’ll get to hear some of the new material they’ve been working on since we last saw them, it’s understandable why they have quickly become a fan favorite fixture at IPO Liverpool! We’re therefore excited to see them play again to a crowd much closer to home!
Fumera – An alternative rock band formed in 2020 in Copenhagen, their music combines blues roots, melodic vocals and a psychedelic attitude. The lyrics explore human imperfections and vulnerability in a stream of consciousness vivid with dream-like imagery. Fans of artists from The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd to My Bloody Valentine will dig their recently released album, be kind.
Going For The One – Formed by guitarist, singer and composer Laura Pold (daughter of bassist Henning Pold of Kim Larsen and Bellami), together with bassist Lise Lotte Elmelund and drummer Pernille Tonnesen, Going For The One plays original rock music, characterized by the dynamic contrast between a hard rock core and a light-floating honest vocal, with catchy pop hooks and harmonies. They are particularly inspired by the ‘60s-‘70s music scene with bands like Led Zeppelin and Yes, taking their name from the title of the latter’s eighth studio album. They’ve got several excellent singles to their credit, which have us eagerly looking forward to an eventual full-length album and their first ever IPO showcase!
Lara Luna – An alternative rock band who aim to capture a range of dramatic emotions in their music. Expect distorted guitars, strong vocals, captivating choruses and soft, catchy ballads that unfold on stage in an energetic and down-to-earth performance.
Mansfield – The band makes their home in Copenhagen, but takes its name after Mansfield, a former coal mining town in the East Midlands of England. Both visually and musically, the quartet takes the audience on a journey back to the early ‘60s, with their trademark retro-cool mod-style suits and energetic performances. The music is honest, direct and instantly appealing, cleverly fusing contemporary rock with the legendary ‘60s Mersey sound, and elements of Motown, resulting in catchy and to-the-point songs that ooze of toe-tapping energy. So far, 7 out of 11 tracks from their debut album, Star-Crossed Lovers, have been played on Danish national radio, and the album itself was awarded “Album of the Week” on radio station P5, and receiving 4 and 5 star reviews in which critics have compared the band to The Beatles, Oasis and The Kinks, as well as Danish rock band The Beatophonics. Pretty impressive, but also very well deserved!! They also deserve our thanks for their help and encouragement in bringing the festival to Copenhagen!!
Brett Perkins – California born, Copenhagen based songwriter Brett Perkins songs and vocals appear on over twenty commercial releases, including a #1 co-written single with Sony Denmark artist Mads Langer, numerous film and TV placements (MTV’s Road Rules, NBC Movie Of The Week, ‘Anna Pihl’, etc), Awards (1st Prize, Great American Song Contest & Australian Song Contest, etc.) and widespread international airplay in a career that’s taken him to 39 countries thus far. His style is a blend of a blend of Americana, Brit Pop, Rock, Soul & Folk story songs, with influences including The Beatles and Burt Bacharach, and recent albums receiving comparisons to George Harrison, Elvis Costello and Crowded House, along with more contemporary artists like John Mayer and Louden Wainwright III.
Mikkel Petterson – A classic pop virtuoso, drawing on influences from the 1700’s through modern pop and rock, his songs will appeal to fans of artists from Johann Sebastian Bach to Burt Bacharach, ELO, and Fountains of Wayne! Truly an artist for the ages!
Vinyl Floor – A long-time Danish alt-rock favorite of IPO (they’ve got five prior full-length albums to their credit and have previously played IPOs Liverpool and LA), led by brothers Thomas Charlie and Daniel Pederson, who we’re excited to see closer to home and playing songs from their latest creation, Employees Must Wash Hands, which takes them in a much more classic pop direction. Think Brian Wilson meets Burt Bacharach meets The Beatles, sometimes stripped down, and sometimes with full chorus and orchestra…yeah, it’s that good!
International Artists
Dan Miraldi – Best known for his power-pop and retro rock-inspired works, the two-time John Lennon Songwriting Contest Finalist has shared show bills with an eclectic bunch of performers such as J. Roddy Walston & the Business, Nelly, Wiz Khalifa, the Wailers, the Trews, Wally Bryson of the Raspberries, Beatle offspring James McCartney, Family of the Year, Blackalicious, the Cool Kids, Fiery Furnaces, and even Wang Chung. His latest full-length album, The Midnight Special/Hundred Song Highway (Alternate Takes), features studio re-imaginings of two of his previous mostly acoustic EPs. If you don’t think of NYC as a heartland rock hotbed, then listen to Dan Miraldi and think again! His brand-new album, Ulysses, is due out just ahead of his IPO Copenhagen appearance, and we’re honored to host his international album release party!
Slim Loris – This Stockholm-based quartet blends modern Indie and ‘60s/’70s-inflected Pop/Rock with Americana and a pinch of Swedish melancholy. They “… create beautiful, melodic songs with emotional vocals that address love, inner tranquility and consciousness, and possess a charismatic singer capable of captivating any fan of Indie music”. (mostdef.blogspot.se) Their recently released full length, Red Loris Yellow Loris, “…is a blend of new rock, old pop and ‘70s vibe sounds. It comes to us so clear and devoid of any profound drive. The album doesn’t feel like it is pining for money or attention. Quite the opposite. [It] feels as if it is happy in its own little rocking world. It’s making its own music, for its own pleasure. We’re just lucky enough to listen” (TJPL News).
Marc Valentine – As frontman of cult power-pop outfit Last Great Dreamers, Valentine has brought sparkle to venues and turntables alike with his distinctive vocals, wry charm and songbook of secret classics. Now, with his favourite guitar in tow, he’s heading out from his home in Norwich on a solo adventure, loading his flight case with a fresh set of tunes, and polishing the trademark twinkle in his eye. His debut album, Future Obscure, builds on his past while expanding his sonic palette, to craft a collection of should-be hits. He’s so well thought of, that he got a deal with the great Wicked Cool Records, and his new album on the label, Basement Sparks, is a would-be power pop classic!
Tara Van – Van is a lifelong singer-songwriter, and active participant in Toronto’s “Beautiful Breakdowns” singer-songwriter series. Her recently released debut album, Rise, showcases her catchy upbeat brand of soulful indie folk pop. We were duly impressed by her performance at IPO Toronto, and are thrilled that she’s making the trip to join us for IPO’s Liverpool and Copenhagen…and you will be too!!
