Artists From San Diego

The Forty Nineteens – Mixing the best of ‘80s-era KROQ coolness and ‘60s Detroit garage rock raucousness with an energetic live show, The Forty Nineteens are sure to guarantee a good time! Their newest LP, Rebooted, takes a psychedelic garage rock trip down 1960’s Sunset Strip, with the top down and the radio on, and their song “I’m Free” was recently named “Coolest Song In The World” on Little Steven’s Underground Garage! Check them out now!

Nina Francis – The San Diego Union Tribune has called her a “promising young singer-songwriter”. Laced with undertones of jazz, blues, and folk, Francis’s music blends timeless songwriting craft with modern pop sensibilities to create a voice all her own. She’s worked with luminaries such as Lamont Dozier, Randy Newman, Glenn Frey, and Melissa Manchester, and her self-titled EP was called “arresting” by the aforementioned San Diego Union Tribune!

My Revenge – Scorching ‘60s influenced power pop courtesy of the band led by Hector Penalosa, who has a storied history in this arena, having also fronted bands like Flying Color, The Zeros, and (currently) Baja Bugs!

The Peripherals – An indie/folk ensemble recognized for their high-energy heartfelt performances, songwriting, vocal harmonies, eclectic arrangements, and wide variety of instruments employed in each set of songs. Their sound has been described as Wilco meets Death Cab for Cutie featuring the Talking Heads, but draws from folk, punk, funk, and jazz influences to retain a unique style. Their music is modern and catchy with soulful storytelling, and has successfully moved a wide audience of music lovers. Check out their latest album, Declarations, and the IPO showcase, and you, too, will be moved!

Steve Rosenbaum’s Mess of Fun – If you like sweet jangly power pop (and who doesn’t? – whether or not they admit it!), you will LOVE the music of this gent (and his band) from San Diego! Fans of Big Star, The Raspberries, and The Plimsouls – to name but a few – should check out his songs, “First in Class,” on last year’s IPO CD, and “Take It Slow” on this year’s edition, and come to his live show!

Scott Samuels – A rock ‘n roll survivor from Oceanside with lots of stories to tell. Throughout his life, Samuels’ love for rock ‘n roll’s “hidden treasure,” and his unique ability to recount the quirkiest milestones of life, love and career, has fueled his songwriting and performances, including those at IPO with his band, Roxy Monoxide. Samuels continues to mine the rich history of his musical and personal past and present with the release of his fourth solo CD, Fabulous Reality! Fans of Elvis Costello, The Plimsouls, and REM should check him out!

Suite 100 – Hailing from north San Diego County, Suite 100 is a mix of sing-a-long melodies, lush arrangements, thoughtful lyrics and pure pop sensibilities. Exploring intricate, lavish and sometimes haunting territories, their long-awaited sophomore album, The Only Cure For Gravity, harkens back to the days when you would throw on headphones and listen to an album in its entirety. Seamlessly crafted, each song is led into the next with a vignette that enhances or foreshadows the ensuing track. Eschewing the theory that lush harmonies and arrangements are for critics alone, Suite 100 also backs up their songwriting with an energetic live act that is not to be missed…so don’t miss them at IPO San Diego!

Super Buffet – Inhabiting the nexus of driving garage rock and earnest indie sensibility, Super Buffet evokes a spirited pillow fight between King Kahn and Jonathan Richman while “96 Tears” plays in the background. Super Buffet is about bringing short, sharp, sing-able songs to the masses or whomever shows up. Check out their IPO showcase to see and hear for yourself…and don’t forget to stop by the merch table to check out their latest release, Sounds Of The Stratosphere, on super cool multi-color speckled 7” vinyl!!

U.S. Artists From Outside Of San Diego

The Armoires – Hailing from Burbank, and led by duo Rex Broome and Christina Bulbenko, The Armoires draw on influences as diverse as ‘60s sunshine pop, new wave and postpunk, classic country and shoegazer dreampop. Their unique harmonies give life to literate and deeply felt tales of love, loss, confusion and joy, and they can be described as everything from a power pop Gram and Emmylou, a janglier version of X, a new wave Fleetwood Mac, the New Pornographers for the lower 48…to the Postpunk Partridge Family! Their IPO San Diego showcase is the first stop on the release tour for their debut album, Incidental Lightshow!

Ships Have Sailed – Since their inception, LA’s Ships Have Sailed have always struck a balance between exuberant pop and substantial alternative rock, a formula for success that has earned them both a loyal following and numerous accolades from ISC, Unsigned Only and The John Lennon Songwriting Competition. Whether doing it slick and electric, as they do on their debut album, Moodswings, or mellow and acoustic, as exemplified by their EP, Whispers, their soaring melodies and heartfelt delivery will stick with you long after the last note of their songs! IPO is honored to have them as the first band ever that’s scheduled to play all six stops in a row of our West Coast tour!!
