IPO Vol 22 CD Song: “Straight To The Blues”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

This is a song that I co-wrote with Bill Lloyd a couple of years ago. We went into the studio with the guys in my band and knocked it out in a couple of days with one other song we wrote. So I thought it might be of interest to some of the people that buy this collection.

2) If you could spend the day with any artist who is no longer living, who would it be, and why?

Probably John Lennon. We could drink Brandy Alexanders, hang out at the Troubadour and watch the Smothers Brothers. Ha! Just kidding. He was such a big influence on my musical life. I would just love to sit and chat and pick his brain for a bit.

3) Same as question 2, but for any contemporary/living artist.

Ian Hunter or Ray Davies would be the one’s I’d like to hang out with for a while. I really like where their songs come from and where they take the listener. They both still put out great records. Age doesn’t seem to have an effect on their writing abilities.

4) What has been the most inspirational moment of your musical career thus far? (can be from either the perspective of performing yourself or of seeing someone else perform)

Seeing Paul McCartney in Ft Worth on his first show in the US since the Beatles. The first time I felt nostalgia. I was a teenager and had no idea what was going on. Also seeing the Mott the Hoople reunion in London in 2009. I was a 14 year old kid for an evening reduced to a puddle of emotions.

5) What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

Going to different cities, seeing new bands and old bands with friends I’ve met over the years. As far as the CD, it’s a good thing for people like me. Because it goes out to like minded people who enjoy that type of music.

6) Where can people who love your song on the IPO CD go to get more of your music and/or find out when and where you’re playing?

IPO Vol 22 CD Song: “Rick Moranis”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

We’ve been told that our best songs are the ones we sing together. This happened to be the most “Power Pop” of the tracks on our new album Relative Dimensions, with both of us sharing the lead vocal. We’ve been playing this song live since our very first electric gig 8 years ago and finally got to laying down a proper recording. It captures quite well the simplicity and energy we were trying to achieve in the early days. The track also has fun lyrics and a title that may catch the eye.

5) What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

We’ve never felt more welcomed or part of a community than as we do at IPO! It’s great playing with fellow musicians and fans who genuinely dig what you’re putting out, stick around for your set, and keep in touch long after.

IPO Vol 22 CD Song: “Turns To Black”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

We thought of another song, we had chosen “Blow Me Up”, which is what gives title to our Lp. But David Bash recommended Sebastian choose “Turns To Black”. A different song in our style, but that also fits perfectly in the IPO selection. Thanks David!

2) If you could spend the day with any artist who is no longer living, who would it be, and why?

We would love to spend a day with John Lennon. We would play with him all those wonderful songs that we like. And by the way, we would ask him for a new song for The Vinylos of his own. We are sure it would be a good meeting …

3) Same as question 2, but for any contemporary/living artist.

With Jeff Lynne. But not only to see a concert of his, but for him to tell us all the anecdotes of the sixties in Birmigham, we will talk with him about Idle Race, The Move, ELO with Roy Wood, and then end up all singing some song like “Morning Sunshine”.
Or maybe he wants to sing with us “Blackberry Way”, which is from his friend Roy Wood.

4) What has been the most inspirational moment of your musical career thus far? (can be from either the perspective of performing yourself or of seeing someone else perform)

The three concerts we have given at The Cavern, at the IPO Festival. There are no words to describe what it feels like. We’ll wish all bands could ever feel that. The feeling is so great for a musician, so huge, that you have to live it.

5) What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

Knowing that David Bash and Rina want us in the compilation and in the festivals is a real pride for us. We are really excited to know that you appreciate us! It is also the best support for our music to be known in the world.

IPO Vol 22 CD Song: “Calendar Street”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

Well, Dr IPO himself David Bash specifically requested “Calendar Street” from our latest album On Safari (2019) so blame him!

2) If you could spend the day with any artist who is no longer living, who would it be, and why?

Hands-down John Lennon, a part of my life for pretty much all of it, and just such an interesting, intelligent character, with a lot to say.

3) Same as question 2, but for any contemporary/living artist.

I know it’s boring to keep banging on about The Beatles, but it would have to be Paul McCartney, for me my all-time music hero. Why? Because he’s done everything – he’s the f*cking man! I’d like to do a track with him, get him on the drums, have a smoke, shoot the shit etc.

4) What has been the most inspirational moment of your musical career thus far? (can be from either the perspective of performing yourself or of seeing someone else perform)

We’ve had some great moments (I played and sang on Marc Ford from The Black Crowes’ solo album Holy Ghost which was a thrill and an honour) and some great breaks (Rival Sons UK tours / Spain tours etc), but for me when we played the Backstage on the Saturday at this year’s IPO Liverpool was just magic. It was the first time up with our new bass player Jimmy Peppers and he’d never been before, and after a possible band collapse, we confirmed that we were better and happier than ever.

5) What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

We adore Liverpool IPO, just coming to Liverpool itself and playing at The Cavern etc – the holy land. The main real joy though is the other great bands and friends we have met there, unique ongoing friendships and collaborations have been forged. Big shout-outs to The Fast Camels, Magic Bus, The Know Escape, Mordecai and Debra, and more!
