IPO Vol 20 CD Song: “Get To You”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

Besides thinking that it would be a good fit, I had just finished the song, and the favorite choice of my own material is usually the last song I’ve worked on. At that point you’ve put your best intentions into something new and it still holds some personal enjoyment.

I’m mostly interested in the latest thing I’ve done until some time has passed. Then I might look back on a song and either tell myself “Hey that’s not bad – what was I thinking”, or in the worst case, “Why did I do that”. Hopefully the former wins out in the long run.

2) If you could play your dream gig, which other three to four artists would be on the bill with you? They can be living, defunct, or dead.

Pretty tough question, as the answer might change quite a bit from day to day, but here goes:

Sam Phillips
George Harrison
Aimee Mann

3) Which artists are you/your band most inspired by?

The Beatles
Sam Phillips
James Taylor
Bob Dylan

4) What is your favorite part about playing IPO and/or being on the IPO CD?

Definitely a multi-part answer to this question:

First of all, it’s great to be asked. Also, just meeting up with other musicians and hearing new music. I think it’s a really great service to the musicians involved. It allows locals and international travelers a chance to hear people perform from across the globe, artists they may not have otherwise had the pleasure of seeing and hearing.

5) How can people who fall in love with your song on the IPO CD get more of your music and find out about any gigs you’re playing?

My CD, Book of Changes, and some of my other songs are available at https://store.cdbaby.com/Artist/MicahGilbert, as well as Spotify, Itunes, Amazon, etc.
Keep an eye on my new website: micahgilbert.com as I am almost done with my new, as yet unnamed, CD.

IPO Vol 20 CD Song: “Sir Finkle”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

There are a couple of songs that Shplang has played in our live set for many years, but that we have never recorded. One is the song on this year’s IPO CD–“Sir Finkle.” It’s a surf tune that we almost always use to open our set, much in the same way Cheap Trick used “Hello There.” That is, it’s really designed for a line-check: first, the guitar comes in, the drums, bass and so on. The song was originally recorded for the last Shplang album, My Big Three Wheeler, but with three other instrumentals already on that album, we decided to save “Sir Finkle” for a rainy day–and we’re glad we did!

2) If you could play your dream gig, which other three to four artists would be on the bill with you? They can be living, defunct, or dead.

Gee, that’s a tough one. If we choose our all-time favorite bands, there is a quite calculable risk that we would humiliate ourselves, so I guess we’ll go with our friends: The Jeremy Band, Blake Jones and the Trike Shop, The Armoires, Plasticsoul. That would be a great gig!

3) Which artists are you/your band most inspired by?

Beatles, Zappa, Rundgren.

4) What is your favorite part about playing IPO and/or being on the IPO CD?

Playing the IPO Festival is always fun–it’s often like a class reunion where we and our fans get to see our friends play and where our friends and their fans get to see us play (and David gets to see us all play!). It’s also a very relaxed, positive environment. No one standing in the back, arms-crossed, giving you the eye. We’re sure all the bands know what we’re talking about.

5) How can people who fall in love with your song on the IPO CD get more of your music and find out about any gigs you’re playing?

You can find Shplang on iTunes, Spotify, cdbaby, and other such sites. And if you’re interested in finding out when we are playing, just follow us on facebook!

IPO Vol 20 CD Song: “Say I Do”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

I chose our lead-off single “Say I Do” for three very good reasons: First, it was the only one mastered and ready! Second, it is a happy, upbeat song that felt like the best fit for an IPO compilation. Third, it’s a wedding song, and David and Rina are getting married, so how perfect is that?!

2) If you could play your dream gig, which other three to four artists would be on the bill with you? They can be living, defunct, or dead.

My dream gig with living/current bands would be Sloan, The Sam Roberts Band, and The New Pornographers. Too many defunct ones to even begin narrowing it down – if I played with The Beatles, I wouldn’t even be able to take the stage I’d be too in awe!

3) Which artists are you/your band most inspired by?

The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, George Harrison, John Denver, The Police, Radiohead.

4) What is your favorite part about playing IPO and/or being on the IPO CD?

My favorite part about playing IPO over the years has been the chance to see it in different cities (with The Orchid Highway, we played LA, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver). Playing on someone else’s turf you get to meet and be exposed to so many different artists. Even at home in Van, that’s our favorite part, seeing and chatting with all the other musicians, and David and Rina – the vibe is so positive and music-focused, it’s great to hang out with like-minded people.
