Featured IPO CD Artist: Michael Roberts

IPO Vol 20 CD Song: “When You Shine”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

The reason I chose “When You Shine ” is because the song was my lead single but also because of the upbeat tempo & positive message it conveys.

2) If you could play your dream gig, which other three to four artists would be on the bill with you? They can be living, defunct, or dead.

John Lennon (Rhythm), Paul McCartney (Bass), Billy Joel (Piano), Stewart Copeland (Drums).

3) Which artists are you/your band most inspired by?

The Beatles, The Beach Boys & Marc Bolan.

4) What is your favorite part about playing IPO and/or being on the IPO CD?

Playing IPO is the great crowds. On the CD is you never know where in the world your song will be played at any given time.

5) How can people who fall in love with your song on the IPO CD get more of your music and find out about any gigs you’re playing?

Facebook is pretty good.

IPO Vol 20 CD Song: “Have You Met You”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

Power pop can truly run a wide spectrum, and our catalogue runs an equally varied gamut. For IPO, we decided to put forth a representation of our most hook-filled and heavy side, thinking “Have You Met You” may be a different and powerful type of song for the IPO compilation. The track has also been well received and spun by various Chicago radio stations hosting local music shows, such as WNUR, WKQX, and WXRT to name a few.

2) If you could play your dream gig, which other three to four artists would be on the bill with you? They can be living, defunct, or dead.

Sloan!!! Nada Surf. The Posies. Big Star (original members). Matthew Sweet (any lineup will do, simply brilliant). Add Material Issue and Urge Overkill if it’s an all-day Powerpopapalooza 😉 Oops that’s more than four.

3) Which artists are you/your band most inspired by?

Certainly those mentioned above. STP; glam rockers like Bowie and Bolan, Spoon, Weezer, Ryan Adams, The Strokes, The Beatles, Jack White, The Who, Smashing Pumpkins, to name a few more. We tend to gravitate toward bands/albums that have a strong connection between guitar hooks and percussion. Frosting On The Beater by The Posies is one of my favorite examples of this guitar-drummer link, and it’s an album I can turn to time and again and be blown away.

4) What is your favorite part about playing IPO and/or being on the IPO CD?

Playing with others who have such passion for this genre is truly exciting. It has been a pleasure talking to others in this community about favorite artists and styles, and every band the night we played was fantastic. You can’t beat a great night of live music. And the chances of hearing someone pull off a Big Star cover are far greater than a typical gig night otherwise. I heard a band play a rocking version of “I’m In Love With A Girl”, and I thought to myself, “I wish I had thought of that!”

5) How can people who fall in love with your song on the IPO CD get more of your music and find out about any gigs you’re playing?

Our bandcamp page has a ton of our music and a lot of it is free. That page is https://thebishop.bandcamp.com/. And our website has our concert dates, show posters and a whole lot of other information. That page is BishopBand.com.

IPO Vol 20 CD Song: “Top of the Line”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

The JetBeats were playing IPO Detroit and David Bash heard “Top of the Line” and told us that we should submit that song for IPO 20. We figured this Bash fellow knew what he was talking about. 😉

2) If you could play your dream gig, which other three to four artists would be on the bill with you? They can be living, defunct, or dead.

If we’re going to get into time travel here, The JetBeats would choose to play the Cavern Club with The Beatles in 1962. Other than that, a traveling IPO road show would be fun – The Stars of the IPO Galaxy!

3) Which artists are you/your band most inspired by?

As the primary songwriter for The JetBeats, I get my inspiration from Merseybeat, early Beatles, and the mighty Kinks.

4) What is your favorite part about playing IPO and/or being on the IPO CD?

Experiencing new places and hearing/meeting fantastic bands that appreciate and create excellent pop music.

5) How can people who fall in love with your song on the IPO CD get more of your music and find out about any gigs you’re playing?
