Featured IPO CD Artist: New Mystery Girl

IPO Vol 20 CD Song: “Crawl Through Your Hair”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

Another New Mystery Girl track, “Brand New Love”, was chosen for airplay on Little Steven’s Underground Garage so wanted to share the energy and movement of “Crawl Through Your Hair”, the title track, for IPO.

2) If you could play your dream gig, which other three to four artists would be on the bill with you? They can be living, defunct, or dead.

The Yardbirds, The Beatles, The Ramones, Generation X

3) Which artists are you/your band most inspired by?

Holy smokes! Have to whittle this down! The Rolling Stones, Joan Jett, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Pretenders

4) What is your favorite part about playing IPO and/or being on the IPO CD?

Grooving with like-minded bands, good vibes, hearing new bands for the festival and being on the IPO CD is cool to be in good company and know that the music is reaching new ears as well as fans through radio and internet airplay. Feels good.

5) How can people who fall in love with your song on the IPO CD get more of your music and find out about any gigs you’re playing?

IPO Vol 20 CD Song: “Ride On”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

As always, I deferred to the ear of David, and his recommendation was a pleasant surprise. “Ride On” is a special song to me, and with it being 5 minutes long, it is tough to market/get on comps. It was refreshing to have this song on the new IPO since I usually have had a poppy/snappy song on it. This song has some more depth and gives a deeper look into my muse. Also, it sends a positive and conclusive message which closes out an album (or a comp. disc) nicely.

2) If you could play your dream gig, which other three to four artists would be on the bill with you? They can be living, defunct, or dead.

Alien Ant Farm, Breaking Benjamin, Stone temple Pilots, Pantera, and Nirvana. What a show… (I could name 1000 bands so I went with first few that came to mind).

3) Which artists are you/your band most inspired by?

I grew up listening to The Beatles, The Rascals, and bands like Chicago and Vanilla Fudge in my mom and dad’s cars on the way to my guitar lessons. Then, around 10 years old I discovered pop rock a-la Green Day, and also the grunge bands like Nirvana, Bush, STP, Alice In Chains, and all I wanted to do is learn their songs on guitar. My “guitar theory” education consisted of learning their songs. Then, later on in high school, I got into heavier music like Pantera, Deftones, and Taproot. Post-high school I got into “Nu Metal” bands like Breaking Benjamin, Seether, and Three Days Grace. There’s a special magic something that all of the above bands have in common… And I think my songs take pieces from all of those genres/bands: I like catchy hooks with driving guitars and an edge. Give me a 3-part harmony chorus, with a crunchy palm muted drop D bar-chord verse and a clever major/minor key change for depth, and I am in heaven. But I like music that makes me feel alive! All that stuff is what naturally comes out in my writing on my new album, Never Leaving California.

4) What is your favorite part about playing IPO and/or being on the IPO CD?

I am humbled and honored to be part of a compilation with such amazing artists. The Power Pop community that David nurtures is a great place to be for connecting with other artists, and getting exposure for my music. Very thankful to be on IPO!

IPO Vol 20 CD Song: “Atmosfear”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

The song we chose “Atmosfear” was chosen as it was one of the last songs we mixed for our 3rd Untitled Danny Echo album. I am working on a video and full single release for it. Thought we’d give IPOers a pre-release treat!!

2) If you could play your dream gig, which other three to four artists would be on the bill with you? They can be living, defunct, or dead.

The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Radiohead, Oasis, Sloan, and Sam Roberts. but that’s a given, too many to really chose from.

3) Which artists are you/your band most inspired by?

That’s a difficult one to nail down. As a band its prob the Beatles, there is so much music available these days so many sounds! Not all directly influences us. Some pop stuff like Foo Fighters, some classical stuff like EriK Satie and Gustav Holst, Some heavy dynamic stuff like TOOL, Pink Floyd, and of course art rockers like The Flaming Lips and Super Fury Animals.

4) What is your favorite part about playing IPO and/or being on the IPO CD?

I love the fact that is a great way to see and hear loads of like minded musicians old and young!. It’s become a cool tradition in Vancouver and as we’re all getting older a great way to see some old friends that don’t play much anymore.
