IPO Vol 22 CD Song: “Christine You’re Mean”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

I have to say, it wasn’t the intuitive choice, as we had released “Remind Me of Summer”, “Get Up”, and “Starpower” as singles prior to the End Over End album release. But we had received repeated favorable feedback on “Christine You’re Mean” from a variety of sources independently. It kind of opened our eyes to what they were seeing, and we all agreed pretty easily that the track “Christine You’re Mean” was the one for this special compilation.

2) If you could spend the day with any artist who is no longer living, who would it be, and why?

Here is the short list;
David Bowie, Prince, Jim Morrison, Jim Ellison, Ric Ocasek, Elvis, Michael Hutchins, John Lennon, George Harrison.

But I’d have to go with Bowie. What a fascinating and truly artistic individual.

3) Same as question 2, but for any contemporary/living artist.

Another list, I can’t resist, this question is just too difficult; Matthew Sweet, Matthew Cause, Billy Corgan, Ryan Adams, Brit Daniel, Alex Chilton, Ian Thornley, so many more…

And this one I just don’t know how to reign-in. All of them are heroes of mine as tremendous song writers that any singer/songwriter could draw inspiration both musically and lyrically.

4) What has been the most inspirational moment of your musical career thus far? (can be from either the perspective of performing yourself or of seeing someone else perform)

Hearing the latest album on vinyl is way up there. Being able to drop the needle on this cool medium is a rush. Second in line would be playing in front of an incredibly attentive crowd in Liverpool at the Cavern Club, thanks to IPO. And I’m not just saying that because this is an IPO interview, it ranked high on our list of adventures to date.

5) What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

It’s a privilege to be associated with these great Powerpop artists on a revered compilation, and tremendously fun to shoot the breeze with those playing the event. In Chicago we had a blast talking with Chip Z’Nuff from Enuff Z’Nuff. What a character. In Liverpool I remember talking with a cool guy from Ireland in the band Slumberjet, who ended up on the compilation as well. So it’s really the interaction in that sense, and the shared infectious excitement inherent in a great lineup as takes place at this Powerpop event.

6) Where can people who love your song on the IPO CD go to get more of your music and/or find out when and where you’re playing?

Kool Kat records
Bandcamp website, where you can get the vinyl
Big blast Records
Spotify,iTunes, etc.

IPO Vol 22 CD Song: “Amanda”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

I chose the song “Amanda” because it is my most requested song. I’m told it’s a catchy song that leaves interpretation of the lyrics to the listener.

2) If you could spend the day with any artist who is no longer living, who would it be, and why?

If I could spend the day with any artist who is no longer living, it would be John Lennon. He was a great lyricist and I would like to ask him about his songwriting process or even co-write a song with him.

3) Same as question 2, but for any contemporary/living artist.

If I could spend the day with any artist who is living, it would be Ken Stringfellow. I have long been a fan of his music and I would like to glean a fraction of his ability to orchestrate songs.

4) What has been the most inspirational moment of your musical career thus far? (can be from either the perspective of performing yourself or of seeing someone else perform)

The most inspirational moments of my musical career thus far have been meeting some of my musical idols. It has been a pleasure being able to talk to them in person and to learn more about the person behind the music.

5) What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

The IPO Festival and CD are both something I look forward to year after year. I have been attending the festival since its inception in Los Angeles and I’ve always found new artists and songs through the festival and CD compilations. The fact that I had a song on this year’s compilation is a dream come true.

6) Where can people who love your song on the IPO CD go to get more of your music and/or find out when and where you’re playing?

My music can be found on CD Baby (https://store.cdbaby.com/artist/joannehodges) or Bandcamp (https://joannehodges.bandcamp.com/). My website is www.joannehodgesmusic.com

IPO Vol 22 CD Song: “Beautiful Dreamer”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

It was the most recent thing I’d “completed” recording-wise (in my living room). Not to mention, I love IPO and Omnivore Records!

2) If you could spend the day with any artist who is no longer living, who would it be, and why?

Elliott Smith – to have him share with me some of the less-easily-discerned aspects of his chord progressions & voicings.

3) Same as question 2, but for any contemporary/living artist.

Paul McCartney – to have him play and sing on at least one of my tunes (along with Elliott). All My Musical Fantasies are similarly self-serving…

4) What has been the most inspirational moment of your musical career thus far? (can be from either the perspective of performing yourself or of seeing someone else perform)

The day my dad bought me a Gibson SG for my 13th birthday. My gear and guitar lessons from ages 10 -13 had been confined to acoustic guitar, so when that first, long-awaited occasion to “go electric” finally arrived, I sprinted home from school to use it.

5) What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

Discovering so much great music + meeting lots of cool and collaborative artists.

IPO Vol 22 CD Song: “Winners Jump”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

“Winners Jump” is the first song on our new Miles & Miles EP, it’s a fast up beat guitar driven tune and we opened our shows in IPO Liverpool 2019 with it. It’s certainly at the heavier end of the Power Pop scale, but it’s grabs you and gets your attention.

2) If you could spend the day with any artist who is no longer living, who would it be, and why?

Phil Lynott, simple.

3) Same as question 2, but for any contemporary/living artist.

Keith Richards, would be great to sit down and listen to some of the genuine rock stories and things he’s seen and done.

5) What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

Honest artists and songwriters, making real music. Lots of great talent using an avenue to showcase their abilities and meet musicians that you’d never get the opportunity to meet. Have made many great friends via IPO over the years.
