Featured IPO CD Artist: The Jeremy Band

IPO Vol. 23 CD Song: “Drink It Up”

1. What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

The song was chosen by David Bash at my request. I thought it would be interesting to see what song he picked.

2. Please describe that pivotal moment when you first realized you wanted to create music or become a band.

At about age 13 I started writing songs and that’s when I realized it’s what I wanted to do.

3. Which other artists (living or dead) do you admire most and why?

There are way too many to list. There are thousands of them.

4. How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact you and your music?

I decided to make lemonade out of Lemons. More albums coming out now than ever before!

5. What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

The life-long friendships I have made with so many wonderful people!

6. Where can people who love your song on the IPO CD go to get more of your music and/or find out when and where you’re playing?

Featured IPO CD Artist: David Minchin From The Innocents

IPO Vol. 23 CD Song: “I Gotta Know”

1. What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

I chose this song for the IPO CD because it is one of my quintessential power pop style songs from my formative musical style dating back to the mid-70s. I still write in this style; in fact, I wrote this song two years ago. Being the main songwriter and driving force of The Innocents (even when not often credited) I continue to have the desire to make music in this style and hope to tour next year with my new line up.

2. Please describe that pivotal moment when you first realized you wanted to create music or become a band.

The pivotal moments for me when I realized I wanted to make pop music was when I saw the Beatles arrive in Melbourne Australia in 1964 (aged 7) and when I first smelled the Raspberries scented sticker on their first LP as I thumbed through new releases in my local record shop (aged 13).

3. Which other artists (living or dead) do you admire most and why?

I admire many other artists for varying reasons: John Lennon, for his distilled rock and roll voice and Picasso-esque musical and lyrical genius of raw self, McCartney for his relentless melodical and stylistic invention and vocal instrumentation and exploration, Bob Dylan, for his encyclopaedic story-telling and depiction of the human spirit through both his lyrics, musical form and unique vocal delivery….Karen Carpenter for her honey laden but sometimes carnal vocal deliver of virginity and innocence…. Joni Mitchell for her patchwork quilt of songs that both sooth you and unease you simultaneously with a voice as pure as the Sasquatchewan snow…. Labi Siffre for his personal songs that bridge pop soul and with totally honest authenticity and commitment…Eric Carmen, Barry Ryan and for their operatic explosive vocals that sound like the discovery of sex….Dusty Springfield , Melanie Safka and Marriane Faithful and for their white soulful vocals that proclaim the joys of sin……and every pop artist whoever understood the link between simplicity and infinity.

4. How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact you and your music?

Covid 19 gave me time to reflect on myself and my place in time, the purpose of living and the way the world is arranged. It became obvious that music was one of the most important inventions and language we have…particularly as the governing bodies and structures who ignored it and failed to recognise or support its role in the world are now falling apart and crumbling. Music is clearly the glue of civilization and humanity.

5. What do I enjoy most about the IPO festival and CD?

That it exists and continues to open up avenues and airwaves for underground pop to flourish. I also enjoy the gratuitous groupies, free M&Ms and the Kafkaesque parallel universe that it inhabits 😉

6. Where can people who love your song on the IPO CD go to get more of your music and/or find out when and where you’re playing?

If people like my song they can check out the past Innocents and Beathoven catalogue of music video clips and memorabilia at theinnocents.com.au (and also a new live concert recording from 1977 is soon to be released on Grown Up Wrong Records Australia) and at DavidMinchin.com

IPO Vol. 23 CD Song: “What I Miss”

1. What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

The song has been popular, and may be one of our more poppy songs that we thought would be a good fit for the IPO CD.

2. Please describe that pivotal moment when you first realized you wanted to create music or become a band.

I have always wanted to play music and was fascinated by it from childhood. By late grade school and seeing rock music on TV and already avidly listening I knew it would be destiny. The tough
part of destiny is how to make it happen.

3. Which other artists (living or dead) do you admire most and why?

There are so many. My musical taste runs a wide gambit. Someone who I did find incredible was Pat Dinizio who is very missed.

4. How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact you and your music?

The pandemic gave us more time to write and record. Unfortunately, it did make so many venues disappear. It was a huge blow not to be able to perform for an audience.

5. What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

It is really great to celebrate a lot of talent that have a similar genre. Being part of the festival allows me to see other bands I don’t know, make new contact, get other peers views on my music.
It is really fantastic to be on a bill with your friends and have a blow-out night.
