IPO Vol 22 CD Song: “These Are The Days”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

I asked my wife and son and myself and this Is the track all had at the top three. Also the guys in my band seem to like performing this one live.

2) If you could spend the day with any artist who is no longer living, who would it be, and why?

Wow, never thought about that! Maybe Freddie Mercury, I’m a huge fan of Queen and because he seemed like such a fun, eccentric, interesting and likeable guy and had such a huge talent. Would be fun spending a day with him!

3) Same as question 2, but for any contemporary/living artist.

Again, never thought about that! …. Paul McCartney for sure. He seems like a great guy to spend time with and he IS a Beatle so! … Imagine writing a song with him…wow!!!

4) What has been the most inspirational moment of your musical career thus far? (can be from either the perspective of performing yourself or of seeing someone else perform)

Well that’s easy! Playing at The Cavern Club the first time! It was a childhood dream coming through. Growing up in a small town in northern Norway it seemed quite unlikely that I would ever play there, but I actually used to say when I was a kid, “one day I’ll play there (Cavern), wait and see!” …and so I did!

5) What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

I’m really, really proud of being associated with such a great festival/CD and all of these amazing artists from all over the world playing Powerpop.

6) Where can people who love your song on the IPO CD go to get more of your music and/or find out when and where you’re playing?

IPO Vol 22 CD Song: “Lord Cornelius Plum”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

It’s an “album track”, but since I feel like all the songs on our records are potential singles, I thought it would still be a good choice for the IPO CD. It’s got a hook, it represents the band’s sound well, and it’s chock full of references to our own songs and various XTC and Swindon points of reference… find all the clues!

2) If you could spend the day with any artist who is no longer living, who would it be, and why?

I prefer to spend time with the living, honestly.

3) Same as question 2, but for any contemporary/living artist.

I’d like to take some guitar lessons from Dave Gregory, if for no other reason than to understand his note choices. He’s really a great player. Maybe I could borrow some of his guitars, too…

4) What has been the most inspirational moment of your musical career thus far? (can be from either the perspective of performing yourself or of seeing someone else perform)

From the audience perspective, it was seeing Glenn Tilbrook hold an audience in the palm of his hand with only his guitar and voice.

5) What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

We’ve been associated with IPO since 2001, and through it, we’ve had occasion to meet and share the stage with some pretty great folks in several states. I think that’s pretty cool.

6) Where can people who love your song on the IPO CD go to get more of your music and/or find out when and where you’re playing?

IPO Vol 22 CD Song: “Divine”

1) What was the reason you chose the song you did for the IPO CD?

Released on my debut double LP On Greenwater Stream, “Divine” is a song inspired by characters and events in Sherwood Anderson’s groundbreaking novel “Winesburg, Ohio” and the focus of my latest release with Birs Recordings.

2) If you could spend the day with any artist who is no longer living, who would it be, and why?

Leonard Bernstein, at any point of his life after he started teaching piano to pay for piano lessons at twelve. I’d take a one hour piano lesson from Lenny when he was a teenager over a day with anyone else except George Harrison. Even boring would be interesting with Mr. Harrison in 1968.

3) Same as question 2, but for any contemporary/living artist.

A whole day? Wynton Marsalis, assuming I could keep up. He’s erudite, experienced, loves to talk and educate. Otherwise a dinner party with Joe Walsh would probably be pretty cool too.

4) What has been the most inspirational moment of your musical career thus far? (can be from either the perspective of performing yourself or of seeing someone else perform)

After 30-odd years of rockin’ in the free world, any moment I can walk away from is an inspiration to my musical career!

5) What do you most enjoy about being associated with The IPO Festival/CD?

The IPO is great on so many levels! The samplers, the shows, and bands, and that David Bash guy, he’s the best!
